We cannot believe that it is already July, and in about 5 to 6 weeks, students will be being arriving in the USA for the new school semester. California Recruiting Success As states continue to struggle with budget woes, international and out-of-state students look more and more attractive than subsidized state residents, particularly in California. According to the San Francisco Chronicle online, the University of California's campaign to recruit more high-paying nonresident students appears to be paying off. New data released Thursday showed big jumps in out-of-state and international students who intend to enroll at UC's nine undergraduate campuses this fall. The number of out-of-staters among incoming freshman and transfer students rose 58 percent to 2,613, while the number of international students increased 25 percent to 5,723. The number of incoming students from California dipped slightly to 51,715. For more information, read the complete story in the San Francisco Chronicle.

This month we feature a question from one of our forum members - they ask: "Hi Everyone! I have some difficulties in applying for J-1 visa to enter USA for an Internship. My nationality is Vietnamese. I have come to Finland for nearly three years to study Business program. I have not graduated yet ( i still have my thesis left). Recently i have got an internship in USA and i have worried a lot about the process of J-1 visa since the USA embassy in Finland wants me to prove a strong social, economic and family ties to Finland. Apparently i just come to Finland to study, i don't have family here. I can prove the economic by bank statement with the amount of money they want me to have, i can prove a good social aspect by friend letter recommendation. I have worked as volunteer for a non-profit organization before in Finland and i still hold that volunteer position so the CEO of that organization can also write me a good work certificate. Going back to Vietnam for a J-1 visa is much expensive than anything since i have to flight back and after that forward to USA and after finishing in USA, i have to flight back Finland for my graduation thesis...So can anyone have any experience in this and help me out. Are there any solutions or suggestions for this situation. I appreciate a lot for your consideration. Thanks so much! Did you know that schools in the USA will offer international students varying amounts of financial aid to study at their school? Depending on the school, this could be as much as 50% of the tuition or sometimes even more. However, trying to find this information is not always easy - you need to delve deep into the school's website and look through all the fineprint to see what is actually offered. To help students find schools offering aid, the Schools in the USA that Award Financial Aid database was created, allowing students to quickly search by state and find the school they are interested in and how much aid they award international students. It can be an excellent way to start your search for schools, especially if your finances are a little tight!

As Chinese enrollment soars, beware the recruiters! As Chinese wealth continues to grow, more and more Chinese families can afford to educate their one child overseas. This year, Chinese students are studying abroad in record numbers, passing India as the leading sender of students to the USA and leading the way in many other countries as well. In any boom market, abuse can flourish more easily, and the surge of Chinese students abroad is no exception, as reports of abuse in the recruiting of Chinese students have appeared. Most Chinese students use agents to help them select and apply to US colleges, and most have no problem. Does anybody know of employers (anywhere in the U.S.) that provide sponsorship (visa/green card) for new graduate nurses? As anyone who has ever visited Texas will tell you, this state has much more to offer international students than modern day American cowboys riding their wild horses through cactus-sprinkled, sun-kissed desert landscapes (although that's a pretty exciting part of its cultural heritage as well!). The truth is less than 10% of Texas is desert terrain. That said, the most populated towns and major cities of Texas (which include Houston, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, Greater Houston, El Paso, and the state's capital, Austin) are spread along its prairies, grasslands, forests, and coastal regions. International students considering studying in Texas will find a wide range of colleges, technical schools, and universities to choose from in these areas. There are several university systems welcoming international students in Texas, including the reputable Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, University of Houston, University of North Texas, and University of Texas systems of satellite campuses. Additionally, there are over 50 independently run public and private universities to choose from within the state. There are a few parts of this question, as students can work while studying (for limited amounts) and there are also specific programs setup for those that want to come to the USA for an internship. As a student in the USA, there are a number of ways you can work in the USA while still studying - be sure to check out our Working in the USA article which outlines OPT, CPT and all the other options. If you want to become an Intern in the USA, there is also the J1 internship program which allows students to visit the USA as part of an internship program. International Students Flock to Brazil's MBA Programs As Brazil's economy continues to develop at high speed, business students from around the world look to establish and cement their ties to Brazil's emerging economy and culture. The Financial Times online reports that from 2006 to 2010, the percentage of GMAT scores sent to Brazil's MBA programs by foreign students more than doubled, from 8.3 percent to 20 percent. Ibmec, a top Brazilian business school featured in the article, has 600 international students, up from just a handful a few years ago, out of a total enrollment of 5,000. Yale University's English Language Institute offers six-week intensive English language courses as well as graduate and professional seminars every summer in New Haven. These seminars are designed to address the language and discipline-specific needs of students, business professionals and law professionals.

Students receive practice in the oral and written communication skills needed to succeed in graduate work, graduate management programs, medical studies, or advanced legal studies. Assignments are designed to provide orientation to vocabulary and concepts of the discipline and to give practice in the kinds of work that will be required of students.

To apply to Yale's 2011 programs, students must complete an application form and a housing application; these must be submitted with the initial fees -- $50 application fee (non-refundable) and a $200 tuition deposit (refundable if a student is not admitted).

The tax season is upon us and most students will only have a few more days to submit their tax return. All international students in the US must file at least one form, and all international students who have recieved money (even things like scholarships and grants count) need to file a US tax return by the April 18 deadline!

On March 11, the world watched in horror as a massive earthquake hit Japan, followed by the devastating tsunami it caused. For Japanese students in the US and around the world, as well as international students in Japan, it was and still is a time of great sadness and anxiety. This month we have a very interesting post from a student regarding OPT and who can sponsor them:

I'm a new grad and working under my OPT. I have some business ideas and would like to start my own company, typically an online (internet) company. I've researched that international students in the US are legal to buy or start their own business but can't be hired by it or anyone else (in F1 visa), my question is, can I use my newly started company to sponsor my OPT and STEM OPT extension? In this case I'll work within F1 visa for 12+17 months.

Another question is, is there any restrictions for this kind companies, like, do I must have an office or I could work from home? Thanks a lot!

US Schools Use Reduced Tuition to Attract International Students Offering financial help to international students works wonders, for those US schools trying to increase their international student enrollment. It doesn't have to be a full scholarship, but anything to make a good international education more affordable will increase your popularity. At InternationalStudent.com we know this well, which is why we run InternationalScholarships.com and IEFA.org, two completely free websites listing scholarships just for international education. Eastern Illinois University is using the strategy to good effect. According to a recent story in the Daily Eastern News, a tuition reduction was the number one factor in swelling international students at the school. From the story: "The number of international students attending Eastern increased after the Undergraduate International Excellence Award was put into effect at the start of the fall 2010 semester. The award comes in the form of a tuition reduction, reducing tuition about $12,000 for undergraduate international students who earn a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Marilyn Holmes, coordinator of the international students and scholars office, said instead of paying the normal international undergraduate rate of $30,292 the award would allow the students to pay the in-state rate of $18,100." This month we have a post in our forums from a student who has a predicament with schools he has been applying to in Germany: Hi all! I have a dilema and I would like to know if you could give me an advise. I have applied to 3 german universities for master programs. Today I received the acceptance letter and declaration of acceptance from 1 Uni but I received it really early (still 3 months till application deadline) and have to sign the declaration of acceptance this week if not I forfeit my place in the program. Unfortunately this isn't my favorite Uni of the three. If I get accepted by my favourite Uni but have allready signed the declaration of acceptance from the other Uni will I be able to forfeit my place at the uni I allready accepted the offer and enroll in the Uni I really want to study in?
